Justin B. Stein is a doctoral candidate and course instructor at the University of Toronto. He began his study of Reiki history shortly after receiving his first initiations in India in 2001 as part of a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship conducting ethnographic research on various energy healing methods. Justin completed his Masters at the University of Hawaii, where his thesis analyzed the various stories told about Reiki's founder, Mikao Usui. His dissertation project examines the ongoing production of Reiki as Hawayo Takata brought it from Japan to Hawaii to North America. In his research, Justin has uncovered many previously-unseen English- and Japanese-language archival materials and has interviewed dozens of Reiki practitioners who studied under Mrs. Takata between 1938 and 1980.

When not reading, writing, practicing Reiki, or teaching at the University of Toronto, Justin enjoys music, craft beer, and Japanese calligraphy.
