Ms.Michiko Imai was born and raised in Nara, Japan. She began her studies of Calligraphy at the age of 4. When Michiko was 25 years old, she received a membership to the Tenshin Kai (calligraphy society) and her life as a calligrapher began. Michiko progressed to the next level, becoming a member of the Cho-ko Guild which is the most prestigious calligraphy society in Japan. During her apprenticeship, she taught calligraphy and studied the art of Japanese silk scroll making in Japan.
In 1998, Master Calligrapher Michiko Imai was awarded, and the currently holds, a guild license called for “Shihan” for teaching both calligraphy and instructing teachers to teach calligraphy. She is among the few to have won multiple category awards in national competitions (Japan). Her work has been displayed at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Osaka Municipal Museum Of Art, Nara City Museum Of Art and Kyoto Municipal Museum Of Art. Michiko arrived in United States in November of 2008. She is currently teaching at her studio (Michiko Studio) in Salem and also a member of the faculty at the Kaji Aso Studio in Boston for Japanese studies.
Michiko has performed her calligraphy at Museum of fine art in Boston, Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Prudential Center in Boston, Boston Children’s Museum, Tufts University, Brandeis University, Bowling Green State University and given workshops for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),Harvard University, Montserrat college of art, North Eastern University and other universities throughout United States. Michiko was a guest at Asian Focus -WHDH Channel 7 (2008, 2009) where she discussed the history of Japanese calligraphy and demonstrated her art.

Calligraphy is a lifelong learning process, one can always find something to learn.

I like the Japanese saying
" 藝道是佛道”
which means‘the way of art is the spirit of Zen.’
I have learned to be "patient" and with hard work, I appreciate it more.
